After a recent split with from her longtime boyfriend my aunt and her daughters moved into my mother’s house. This is a new chapter in the lives of the seven women within this home and this uncommon family dynamic. With both fathers gone each mother has stepped in, perhaps unintentionally, to take on the role and add needed support in the lives of each daughter.
The notion of blood as the primary definition of family has therefore been reinforced in an utterly pivotal way for all or us, because it’s the same blood that leaves all of us diagnosed with various mental illnesses. It is how this unusual bond of common understanding and suffering informs the dynamic of this unique family that I hope to convey and explore in this photographic series. I am compelled to create a series of images that chronicles this aspect of our reality, which is conspicuously missing from the family album.
